Bombarding yiz, I am. But I couldn't get up from the computer and go and make banana and walnut loaf (mmmmm) without mentioning that [livejournal.com profile] niallm and I finally got around to revealing to the assembled masses that we'll be getting married on 8 February 2005 (which, as astute readers of my last entry will no doubt instantly spot, will be our sixth anniversary).

Registry office. Few frills. Official bit on Tuesday (since that's when the anniversary falls); party on Saturday (to make it easier for out-of-towners to attend). Shoestring budget. Some manner of ceremony at party, including music and speeches. Details to be worked out over the next 13 months. Frugal year ahead, because I have a fierce desire to go to New Zealand on our honeymoon...

Since you ask, no, there wasn't a Big Proposal Thing. The fact is that Niall and I have been proposing to each other - and accepting - hand over fist since late spring 1999. We've proposed to each other in five European capitals, indeed, and also in one US state and in numerous other places in between. So no fanfares, no knees gone down on, no ring (diamond industry despicable). It's all good.

Thanks - I really appreciate the offer, since I suspect the conventional "Plan Your Wedding"-type books won't be much help!

Plan your wedding books helps with legal aspects (how many proofs of ID and nationality do I need? Are you joking?) and with things you never knew "everyone knows" about weddings; I checked some of these with my mother to see if they were real, and am glad that I toed the line on some of them so's some of my more distant family were pleased.

The only thing that went wrong at my wedding celebrations was that the food was late, but if you're having a party seperate from a ceremony people won't have been waiting hours already so won't be about to die of starvation. I believe in feeding people.

These are very good points. I'm fairly sure that I know about 1% of the things everyone knows about weddings. Happily, the official bit in our case will be attended by a very small number of relatively unshockable people, so we shouldn't run into too many difficulties there.

On the party front, I rather suspect that we'll end up making it so clear that it's Not Traditional, Damnit! that our more conservative guests will be pathetically grateful for anything recognisable to cling to, and won't have the energy to give out about the aberrations.

Hee hee!

Thanks. I hope so too ... but I doubt our ability to avoid the usual tizzies. They'll be about different things from the norm, maybe, but they'll be there.

Thank you! It doesn't feel so much like news to me, since I've known for years we were going to get around to it at some point :-)

Just got off the phone with Annie, who's at a family wedding in Missouri, and she ordered me to go online and pass on her congratulations immediately, so here you go!
