Carrots

I was terribly clever with carrots the other night.

I peeled four or five large ones and chopped them into batons. I peeled a heeyewidge lump of ginger (almost the size of a small egg) and chopped it, also, into very tiny batons. Then I heated a goodly quantity of vegetable oil, sizzled a teaspoon of fennel seeds in it, added the carrot and ginger, plus salt, pepper and a small gollollop of honey, and fried rapidly until the carrots began to brown.

OMNOMNOMNOMNOM.

Odd thing is, I don't even like fennel seeds. Except I've started to use them in a couple of recipes, and I've found contexts where they work for me. In particular, the smell of fennel seeds frying on their own in oil is utterly delicious.

This has me all fired up, now, to conquer my remaining major food dislike: GRAPEFRUIT. Perhaps there's a way in which I can learn to love it too, after all these years.

That sounds divine.

Having never liked grapefruit, I developed an unstoppable craving for it while I was ill. I was getting through a couple of cartons of grapefruit juice a day, at one point. My opinion of it is now completely changed and I love it.

Ooh, interesting. I may have to try it soon.

I presume you've tried putting sugar on it?
Try mixing grapefruit juice with other juices.
Also, if you see them, try pink grapefruit. Not as sour as yellow.

I haven't tried any grapefruit at all in years - the taste used to give me a pronounced involuntary shudder, which I found very unpleasant. But perhaps there are ways around that. I've actually never had it with sugar. Someone ages ago suggested grilling it, too, which could be good.

I had it with sugar as a kid. I'm not sure whether I liked the grapefruit or just the sugar :-) These days I can have it without, but I couldn't back then.

Grilling sounds interesting. I've never tried that.
