What I did on my holidays
Jun. 9th, 2003 12:16 pmI wasn't on any holidays. I just inadvertently took a nine-day - nine-day - break from both of my journals. How did that happen? Some time last weekend (not the one just gone by) I became overwhelmed by the Web, felt panicky when I thought of going near it - all that information, all those people industriously tapping, trapping me in a net of stories, words, words as far as the eye can see, no air, no light. Nothing.
So I stayed away. I hope you don't mind.
In addition, work has gone somewhat insane, I'm having major novel bumps, a friend and I had to sort out some fairly serious personal stuff, my church choir had an extra service on Wednesday and a new mass to learn for yesterday, and my chamber choir is deep in the throes of preparing for concerts this Friday and Saturday, so I suppose it's not that surprising that I'm feeling a little stretched...
Some glimpses
1. COME TO THE MORNINGTON SINGERS CONCERT! Friday 13 June in Christ Church Cathedral, Dublin, or Saturday 14 June in St Patrick's College Chapel, Cavan, both at 8pm. Tickets at the door, €12 (full) or €6 (concession), but you can buy full-price tickets in advance from me for €10. The programme - all secular, on the theme of love - is quite luscious: Brahms Liebeslieder, madrigals by Monteverdi and Tomkins, six nocturnes by Mozart and three stout choral arrangements of jazz classics to finish up. Be there! You know you want to.
2. I was up until 2:30 this morning finishing the bloody programmes (for various reasons we need a slightly different version for Cavan). Better than last time, in that (a) I got to bed earlier and (b) this wasn't in fact the very completely utterly last ultimate final possible moment in which the job could conceivably have been done, which is what one might have been led to expect from my modus operandi on previous occasions. Special thanks are due to
glitzfrau, who generously fed the manic Radzer delicious and healthful curry, without which the evening would have been even more trying.
3. I have an interview next week for my boss's job (she's gone on a career break). Between now and then I want to find something repextable to wear with my black linen jacket. I have no idea what the field/shortlist is like, so I'm attempting to minimise obsessive speculation on My Chances.
4. I've instituted a self-reward system, somewhat akin to
ailbhe's. Points for 500 words of novel, for submitting work for publication or competition, for sundry maintenance tasks. Reward for every 10 points. So far so good: I've earned four points. On Saturday I earned my first novel-point, and really felt I got back into the story. I think this could be good.
5. Choral glitz of the year: I've been asked to deputise in a concert later this month for a friend who sings in a recently founded octet. I'm nervous: it's Bach motets, a lot of it will be one to a part and there'll be three rehearsals max, but also, I mean to say, woohooooo!
6. I missed this, I'm realising. Good to be back.
