Wanted to record this quotation I came across today in the paper I'm editing:

By the God that sees us all
Rent payers they will surely fall
For while Parnell in gaol remains
Captain Moonlight must take pains
In every way, both day and night,
To make the tenants go aright
So now to end
Enough I've said
With £50 for a rent-payers head.

Any person who disregards these rules will be punished with certain death. Down with Victoria la Reine. Down with traitors and spies and mean tenants on the Ventry estate who betrayed Parnell by paying their rent, who think that it is not known as yet but let them prepare for death!

[Notice signed by "Captain Moonlight or United Irishmen" and posted publicly (presumably somewhere near Ventry) in the early 1880s.]

--------------------

I find this fascinating and, in my cultural-élitist way, amusing, but it also makes me feel queasy to think of the people trapped between the opposing forces.
