Questions from [livejournal.com profile] socmot

1. Michael McDowell is one of your local TD's. How do you feel about this?!

Actually, he's not: I'm just over the border into ... *sob* ... Aengus Ó Snodaigh country. I'd cheerfully swap him for Minister Mick, quite frankly, odious though the latter undoubtedly is.

2. Is it easy to keep a house as old as yours in good repair?

Oh, I wouldn't know, COZ WE DON'T.

I suspect any house needs a certain degree of maintenance, but the older it is, the more likely that major things are going to cause problems. Our latest potential cash sink is a possibly dodgy drain, which may need replacing. Mind you, in the newly renovated office where I work, it turns out that the person who installed one of the toilets didn't actually see fit to seal in any way the pipe leading from the cistern to the bowl. With hilarious results. So new doesn't necessarily mean easier to maintain.

3. Do you work on all sorts of academic materials, or a specific area?

We publish in specific areas, and I work on our humanities stuff. Lots of archaeology, some history, some Irish studies (folklore, philology, linguistics), some international relations.

4. What's the boldest thing that the Oyster has done?

"Bold" isn't really a concept he's grasped yet. He explores. If he goes for something dangerous or extremely inconvenient, he gets stopped.

He did bite another child at the creche a while ago. But purely in the spirit of enquiry.

5. What is the downside, if any, of living opposite a canal?

I actually can't think of any downside, as such. I suppose theoretically, we're closer to lots more rodents than we might otherwise be, but that honestly doesn't bother me in the abstract.

Oh right, I thought Minister Mick ran the show in your part of the world - he's only further in so! But yes, Angry O'Snotty isn't much fun I'm sure :-/

Have you been privy to the odious Councillor Keegan and his "I have a Dream" car yet? It's for his website - http://www.ihaveadream.ie/ - don't you just love Fianna Fáil?

Happy to hear the canal poses no problems - I used to walk up that way on my way to a night-course in Griffith College (I dropped out of it because it was terrible) in 1997 and there was a bit of anti-social behaviour going on along the canal. A bit scary in the dark of winter!
