I got back from rehearsal this evening (for our CONCERT on SATURDAY, which is going to be ACE, plug plug) to find that our gas boiler appears to have packed in. At least, when I tried to turn it on earlier there was a rather sickening little sound from its innards, as of something small and vital going clunk. And now there's no heat.

At least it's May (not that you'd know it from the driving drizzle outside). I hope we don't need to replace the boiler, because I'd much rather spend that money on nice tiles or a spiffy new hob or similar. Replacing the boiler is on the medium-term list - we want to get a high-efficiency one, for which there's now a grant - but if we have to do that straight away, we'll need to compromise on something else.

You know, people don't realise quite how pinchy diamond shoes can actually be.

Oh dear, I hope it isn't kaput. Though I can point you at a nice boiler-replacing man if you do need to replace it, because we are RIGHT NOW getting a new one fitted. Ours still worked but was a)very old and inefficient and b)positioned cunningly so that you would need to take apart one of the kitchen cupboards to service it.

Just in case you didn't know the details, you only get the grant if you get a new high-efficiency boiler AND new heating controls, which are about an extra grand on top of the price of the boiler. Grant is 700 smackers.

No, the boiler lives - after a fashion, anyway, which is good enough for now. Are you getting a high-efficiency boiler?

Haha, we are also in "hope our boiler lasts another year" mode, because we spent all our easily-accessible money on doors, windows and a fence.

Pinchy-pinchy indeed.

It's new. There's grants available for various improve your home environmentally things. My parents have got solar powered water heating in.
Don't know how long it'll be around. These things don't tend to stay.

We'd love to get solar panels, but we may have to go for some of the more cost-effective measures first (solar panels at current prices take many, many years (over a decade?) to earn their keep, AFAIK).

Eep!

Nuteile saw something claiming that photoelectric solar panels take longer to earn their keep than they'll last. May have been a biased thing he read, but I think the general consensus is that they're not really worth it. Solar powered heating should be much better though.

I think our underground heating will earn its keep in 4-5 years. Solar would be longer than that, AFAIK.

..though see above, you can't get one for just the boiler, you need to get various other eco-doodads added to your heating system as well. Though they will all apparently save you money in the long run.

See SEI for details.
