In an attempt to cheer myself up, here are 5 good things about my life:

1. This is the last day of my twenties. I've been looking forward to my thirties for ages. I anticipate a fun decade.

2. The RDS Knitting and Stitching Show starts tomorrow, and man, I'm there.

3. I appear to have a paying translation gig. I love translation.

4. Despite various statements to the contrary, I was seized by a fit of enthusiasm on Monday and started a NaNoWriMo novel. This is partly an exercise in wading bravely into an endeavour at which I am almost certain to fail ... but so far it's going really well.

5. My sister is coming home for a visit this weekend - it'll be really great to see her.

Nope, still not particularly cheery. [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau and [livejournal.com profile] brandnewgun will be much better able than I am to articulate why the bourgeois pleasures I've listed seem so hollow when set against the huge abstract horror of the global political landscape...

Hooray for NaNo! I hope that it brings as much joy (if not necessarily as much fertility...) as it did last year!

and yeah, bourgeois comforts. Alas, I have rather few meself at the mo, and it still doesn't make the hideous landscape any better.

I wish you could have gotten a present in the form of a Kerry win.
But still, happy birthday!

Happy birthday for tomorrow! Being 30 is great. You sit more upright on bicycles, feel paranoid passing groups of teenagers on the street, and finger your scalp convinced that you detect the beginnings of a bald patch that is not showing up in the mirror, although that last one may not apply to you.

I feel strangely cheerful about Bush winning. I have no idea why because he's basically the opposite of everything I would hope for in the leader of my country. Fortunately, as I have been reminding people, he's only the leader of some loose confederation of politically divided states on the other side of the Atlantic and clearly has no real power (unless you INVITE HIM IN...muhaha!). I guess my feeling cheerful must be a kind of emotional immune reaction.

Good luck with Nanowrimo - I'm doing it this year too. I'm amazed you can find the time with yer baby and all...
