This is becoming remarkably tedious. A couple of weeks ago, I took my manky tonsils to the doctor and got put on a course of Augmentin, which I took after waiting a couple of days to see would the tonsils get over themselves of their own accord.

And I got better.

Then I got worse again.

I spent Monday and yesterday at work, trying to pretend that I was fine, that my sore throat was just an allergic reaction to the dust and that my thumping, painkiller-proof headache was down to the paint fumes (we've just moved into a newly refurbished office) or the strain of adjusting to my new 19" flat-screen monitor (poor, poor me).

But no. I spent last night in classic hot-and-shivery delirious-dreams mode, and finally gave up this morning and admitted that yes, I am ill. Again.

Doctor confirms that it's a fine, strapping streptococcal throat, and has put me on a two-week course of penicillin. Happy days.

Oh dear. Sorry to hear that. I hope you feel better soon...

I also hope that my very similar symptoms are not what you've got. Can you catch strep through the interbets?

Can you catch strep through the interbets?

I don't think so, but perhaps it would be safest to wear a face mask for a while, just in case...

Summat I've oft wondered - are 'strep throat' and 'tonsilitis' one and the same thing?

As far as I know, tonsillitis is any sort of infection of the tonsils (or where your tonsils were, if you've had them removed), and strep throat refers to a specific type of infection in your throat, but I'm not sure.

Ah, right...I've had lots of tonsilitises, but I've only ever heard Americans refer to 'strep throat' - maybe it's just what I'd call a 'sore throat'? (Not that sore throats can't be really, really horrid, just in case Ms Radz things I'm being horribly unsympathetic...)

Strep throat is a streptococcal infection of the throat, I believe (and may even be able to spell!). I've had the same doctor (in the UK) diagnose both generic tonsillitis and strep throat, so there must be some distinction, even if it's only that the doctor was bored and fancied a change.

Also, [livejournal.com profile] radegund, that sucks. I am sending waves of sympathy. Also, I imagine this persistent minorish-infection-getting relates to the stress you mentioned a while back, so I am also sending low-stress and massagey type vibes.

Yeah, I think "tonsillitis" just means "inflammation of the tonsils", whereas strep throat is a more specific bacterial infection. I always find it a little amusing to go to the doctor and be told, for instance, "you have gastritis", which means "you have a sick tummy", which I could've told them - and for cheaper than €45, too.

Thanks for the sympathy. Yes, the stress is a big part of it. Campaign to relax must be launched (*clenches teeth, furrows brow, mutters "relax! relax, damn you!"*...).

Oranges! There's an idea. I tend to forget about oranges.

Strong sympathy. Hope it all goes away soon. My tonsils are swelling like balloons, but it's because of the chest infection - not because they themselves are infected. So paracetemol deals with them fairly well.

That is one narsty infection you have, all right. May it go away soon. My tonsils are always the first to shout when there's trouble afoot - which is one reason why I've taken so long to treat this properly: they quite often just calm down after a bit of grumbling.
