Do you think that every element of human culture must necessarily be passionately interesting to a subsection of humanity? Or are there things that are boring to everyone?

Why?

This is just about the best "silly" question I've seen on LJ. Rushed off feet with pages right now, but will try to give Some Thought to the issue later... For now though, I'd offer "Ditch digging" as a provisional candidate: it's tedious, and demanding enough not to leave a lot of energy left over for doing ancillary activities.

I can well see being interested in the theory of ditch construction, though, and ditches as a micro-habitat of the traditional countryside, and stuff. So perhaps the ancillary activity might be thinking about ditches?

Hmmm. How about cleaning the grout in a shower? Could there possibly be any sub-culture of shower cleaning afficionados?

Toothpaste on an old toothbrush works quite well.

Heh.

I don't clean the grout, as such. I just give the shower a quick wash with a (dedicated) shower puff and some shower gel while I'm waiting for my conditioner to do its magic, so it doesn't really get dirty...

And yes, I've encountered some engaged discussion on the subject of cleaning the shower, with participants who were not in any way coerced, so apparently there are people who are interested in such things. Passionately, though? I wonder.

I suppose it would come somewhere between someone finding it passionately interesting and everyone finding it boring. Slips between the cracks, perhaps.

"Ditch digging"

No - it's of enormous interests to archaeologists!
