That (or something similar) is what Jack Straw said in his Commons statement yesterday. As if there's any doubt that this war will be deemed "necessary" by those in whose interests it is to wage it.

The War Porn factor on most of the news coverage has been sickening. In general I've been tuning out. Watching Our Man In The Desert reports induces feelings of rage and helplessness that I know are neither useful nor healthy.

Compared to the majority of the world's population, however, we in Ireland are anything but helpless. The least we can do, [livejournal.com profile] glitzfrau and I have decided, is raise some money for one or more aid agencies working with victims of this war.

A plain old raffle, to start with, and perhaps some sort of bring and buy sale. The thought of how tiny this effort will be in the face of what's happening is appalling, but more appalling is the thought of doing nothing.

Suggestions on a postcard...

now you've wormed Agnes into my head, curse you!

Ideas would include: get friends to commit stuff for b&b, do a car run to pick it all up the night before, and hold it at our house. We could also sell dhrinks and bikkies (cheaply!). Raffle implies a desirable object to be raffled: do you have one? I don't, but maybe the Nialler has some electronics he wants to shift. Or, we could do that talent auction thing - where you auction off services, like a German lesson from me (hah!), a CV revamp from you, a massage from Niall, whatever.

I think the main thing is to set a date and get publicising.

Yes indeed! All good. (I like the idea of a talent auction...)

As for the raffle Grail, what I initially had in mind was to put together a small hamper-style thing - Fair Trade goodies arrayed in an Oxfam basket - and display it in the hallway at work.

No reason why there wouldn't be two such hampers, one for my workies and one for the event at Tigh Parnell.
